A team of three crane operatives from Ainscough Crane Hire have had their dedication and professionalism recognised by the site team of a new packing and warehouse facility, built by specialist logistics developer, SSI Schaefer.
The team of three, Andy Jackson, Paul Pearson and Lee Barnes are operating a 100 tonne crane at the site in Macclesfield as part of a 16 week run.
Gary Rathburn, depot manager at Ainscough’s Manchester Depot said: “We welcome feedback off all of our customers and for the team to be recognised with this award is very positive news. They are a great group who embody the Ainscough way, with a focus on safety, a strong work ethic and taking a professional approach. We are all very pleased for them.”
Paul Pearson, crane operator, added: “The award came as a surprise, as we were just going about our job as we always do. Of course, we are pleased and happy that it reflects well on us and on Ainscough generally.”
Jeff Steer from SSI Schaefer added: “The ‘Team of the Week’ award has been set up by the principal contractor on site to recognise those contractors who are going above and beyond expectations. It is clear that the recipients are thoroughly deserving of it. We’d like to add our congratulations to the Ainscough team for collecting it this week.”

Cycling 170 miles over one weekend, three Ainscough Crane Hire employees from the Preston Depot completed the Coast to Coast challenge in aid of Cancer Research UK.
Philip Kennedy, Andy Greenhalgh and John Morgan took to their bikes from St Bees Head on the Cumbrian coast to Robin Hood’s Bay in North Yorkshire on the 24th and 25th September.
With over 40,000 regular volunteers, Cancer Research UK has raised millions of pounds since its formation in 2002, with fundraising events such as the ‘Coast to Coast’ bike ride which plays a crucial part in helping the charity fund projects.
Reflecting on his teams gruelling cycle across the country and the money raised for charity, lift supervisor, Phil Kennedy said: “We were challenged by the depot manager to undertake some fundraising as part of Ainscough’s 40th Anniversary Charity Challenge, and Cancer Research sprung to mind straight away.
To mark the company’s 40th anniversary, Ainscough has committed to match fund depot’s fundraising activities so far raising a fantastic £760.
“I’ve had a few family members that have passed away due to cancer and I think that it is a charity that is close to a lot of people’s hearts.
“The weather was horrendous on the first day, there was a real head wind when we were near the M6 coming out of the Lake District. However, the second day was very pleasant and it helped us over the line.”
“It took a lot of work out of the legs and we made it more challenging for ourselves, as we didn’t take a direct route. The lads in the cycling club organised the route and they really punished us. On the first day I thought ‘why are we doing this!’ that’s how hard it was.”
Joined on the expedition by minibus, driver John Carter along with two of his friends from the Leigh Premier Cycling Club said: “The whole cycle took close to two full days, I was the novice of the group as I have only recently started cycling, but Andy is in the club and he goes out most weekends. John has also done a fair bit of cycling too, which meant I was lagging at the back.
“I think we should make this an annual thing now, I’ll definitely push to do something similar again.”

The social media channels of Ainscough Crane Hire are continuing to grow as a result of a concerted effort by the marketing team to develop the digital shop window for the company.
For the first time, the number of followers on the company’s Twitter feed has broken through the 2000 followers mark. The channel is used as a notice board of activity for events and announcements from the company and also as a route to highlight the latest employment opportunities.
Marketing and customer services manager, Joanna Hughes said: “Social media is a vital channel for every modern, forward-thinking company and we have been using it for a number of years. We develop some great traction at times as there is a large audience which is interested in our work.
“It’s interesting to see the projects that Ainscough gets involved in. Through the use of our social media channels we get the opportunity to showcase our strength, depth and capabilities in real time from our national network. It’s very rewarding work and we enjoy working and engaging with our customers and colleagues within the Ainscough team.”

The Birmingham Depot has become the latest Ainscough Crane Hire branch to open its doors to customers to provide a behind-the-scenes look at its operations.
Open between 10am and 2pm on Thursday October 13th, the depot team were on hand to meet and greet customers who availed themselves of the display cranes which included a Liebherr MK140 tower crane, a Liebherr LTM 1040-2.1 40 tonne all terrain crane and a Kato CR250 25 tonne city crane.
The 35 guests also undertook a guided site tour including the crane workshops, received a presentation entitled ‘Why Ainscough? Make the Safe Choice’ and were able to test their skills at the controls of a crane with the ever-popular target practice activity.
There was also a hamper draw and, not for the faint-hearted, the opportunity to ride up in the cab of the mobile tower crane to a height of 35m, giving a spectacular view of Birmingham and the surrounding areas.
Peter Anthony, depot manager at Ainscough’s Birmingham Depot, said: “The open day was a very worthwhile event and the visitors really appreciated the chance to have a look around the cranes and understand more about our services.
“We were very pleased to welcome so many of them into the depot and it really helped to underpin our relationships with some key customers.”
The Midlands Open Day follows on from other successful events held this autumn in the North West, Yorkshire and Scotland.
Ainscough Crane Hire are investing in the future; “Crane hire is a niche business and if we don’t train our own engineers for the future, we simply won’t have the talent available to us when we need it.” Graham Weights is Ainscough’s service support manager and has recently been part of the team which has overseen the latest intake of apprentices to the company.
The group of six apprentices are now beginning four years of study and hands-on experience which will test their suitability for the role with the target of moulding them into fully-fledged Ainscough engineers.
The six new apprentices are: Sam Flynn based at the Dundee Depot, Charlie Ferguson at Maidstone, Aiden Jones at Stanlow, Jack Kenworthy at Preston, Connor Dodgson at Stockton and Kye Connop at Birmingham.
As part of their official induction, the group spent two days at the Preston Depot receiving training and guidance on the company, what they can expect and what is expected of them.
The induction agenda consisted of the Mandatory Ainscough Safety Training presentation, Crane Safety Inspection, “Why Ainscough” presentation, 5s Training, Leadership Message and Conduct & Behaviour.
They are now nearing the end of a four-week residential course at Myerscough College in Preston from where they will go back to their host depot and work under the guidance of the depot team with the support of a designated mentor.
Graham Weights again: “At a recent count from 60 engineers, 25 had come through the Ainscough apprenticeship route which again demonstrates the importance of this talent stream for the business.
“We take a strategic approach to apprentice numbers these days factoring in the existing resource and its likely attrition rate over the four-year cycle. This means that we have a 90% retention rate of those apprentices which make the grade, the majority of whom do so. It is fair to say that we have been very impressed with the attitude and approach of this year’s apprentices so far and we are very confident that they will grow with us over the coming months and years.”

Market leading national lifting solutions company, Ainscough Crane Hire has helped to realise a new art installation at the gateway to a new village development near the town of Wouldham in Kent.
Peters Village, developed by Tremport, is a village of up to 1000 homes which represents an important element within Tonbridge and Malling Borough Council’s five-year housing land supply.
London artist, Mark Maxwell, was commissioned by Art Project Management to design a sculpture to be positioned on the new roundabout which forms the main entrance to the new development.
Designed to include an arch, in reference to the history of the site which was home to the old cement work belonging to the local Peters family, the sculpture also references the river Medway and rural beauty and wildlife around the development site.
The seven metre wide arch was delivered in two sections each weighing 2.5 tonnes. Working on behalf of Art Fabrications Ltd, the Ainscough team lifted each section using a 90-tonne crane from the Maidstone fleet. Each side of the arch was fixed into position at ground level before being welded together at its apex.
Maidstone Depot manager Rani Notarianni said: “More often than not, our work is hidden from the view of the general public as we are involved in lots of behind-the-scenes activity. On this occasion, we are fortunate enough to be installing a piece of sculpture which will be seen by thousands of passersby for many years to come.
“We are accustomed to the responsibility of delivering others’ visions and creations and we are quite sure the artist will be very pleased with the role we’ve played in realising their creative idea.”
